35 - Hormones

Looking down at Jen lying in her bedroom, in her own bed, made Bekka feel a little more normal than she had felt in a long time. Things had been so crazy for her the last few weeks, she didn’t know if things would ever feel normal again. But watching Jen sleep brought a smile to her face. Normally, seeing Jen like that, all she would want to do was jump on the bed until Jen screamed at her to get out of her room, but this time, Bekka just smiled and softly backed out of the room, leaving the door open a crack.

Dr. Malik had told her that the sedatives would last through the night, so Bekka felt like she had some time to go and grovel. She ran out the door, through the rain and got into her car. She hated driving in the rain anyway, but what she really hated, was driving in the rain to Cook’s. She had to drive down the winding Black Star Canyon Road a good mile out of town to get there. With the rain coming down this hard and the visibility, or lack of it, that there was; it was a nightmare.

She finally reached Cook’s, after a journey four times longer than it should have been, and rushed out of her car and into the building. As she walked across to the bar, she could see that Tynel wasn’t very happy.

“Hi, Ty,” Bekka smiled.

“Where the hell have you been?” she said. “I’ve been covering for you. Believe it or not, I do have a life outside of this place.”

“I’m so sorry. I was coming in to try to make it up to you and Hank.”

“Hank’s been locked up in his office for a while now, so you’ll have to start on me.”

“Well, I found Dakota and Colt.”

“I know about Colt. That jerk was in here earlier, being crappy with me.”

“What did he say?”

“He was just being his normal, intimidating self. That’s good news about Dakota, though. Do they know? About the…” She pointed to Bekka’s stomach.

“Yeah. They both know. Everything seems to be working out on that end of it.”

“Sounds like a miracle.”

“They both just want the best for the baby and me.”

Tynel’s eye widened and then she looked down, pretending to dry glasses.

“What’s going on?” Bekka didn’t pick up the sign until it was too late. Arms wrapped around her and she felt a kiss on her neck. She spun around with her fist cocked and ready to swing, to find Colt standing there with a sheepish grin. “What are you doing?”

“Just giving you a little cuddle.”

“Well, don’t.”

“Tynel, give me a beer and a clear soda for my girl here.”

“I’m not your girl, Colt.”

“You’re not not my girl.”

“I don’t have time for this. I need to go talk to Hank.”

“No you don’t,” Colt grinned.

“Yes I do. I need to grovel about not showing up my last couple shifts.”

“You really don’t need to. I took care of it.”

“What do you mean?”

“You have the next few days off, and when you come back, you’re getting promoted.
